Back-to-School Tax-Free Weekend Is Coming Up Soon
Back to school season is almost here. In fact, in some districts across Texas, teachers are already reporting and getting their classrooms ready for kids to start arriving. But kids won't be going back for a couple of weeks.
That means between now and then parents will be getting their kids ready with new supplies, new clothes, and more. And soon, many back to school items in Texas will be tax-free during tax-free weekend.
When is Tax-Free Weekend for Back-to-School Items in Texas?
According to the Texas Comptroller's office, tax-free weekend for back-to-school season will be August 8th through the 10th. The Dallas Morning News reports that Texas has been offering tax-free weekend for school items for more than 25 years now.

What Items Are Tax-Free During Back-to-School Tax-Free Weekend?
Tax-free weekend applies to most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks that are less than $100. Savings apply at stores online and in-person. Here are some of the items that do not qualify during tax-free weekend according to the Texas Comptroller's website.
- items sold for $100 or more
- clothing subscription boxes
- specially-designed athletic activity or protective-use clothing or footwear
- For example, golf cleats and football pads are usually worn only when people play golf or football, so they do not qualify for the exemption.
- Tennis shoes, jogging suits and swimsuits, however, can be worn for other than athletic activity and qualify for the exemption.
- clothing or footwear rentals, alterations (including embroidery) and cleaning services
- items used to make or repair clothing, such as fabric, thread, yarn, buttons, snaps, hooks and zippers
