The suspect in a double homicide committed Tuesday afternoon has been killed in a car wreck.

The wreck occurred near Plains on Highway 380 just after 1 p.m. The Pontiac Grand Am driven by 42-year-old Jose DeLuna struck a tractor-trailer rig. DeLuna was pronounced dead at the scene.

DeLuna was suspected of shooting his in-laws, 70-year-old Jesus Contreras and 63-year-old Rosa Contreras just after noon Tuesday at their home in Brownfield.

KAMC-28 reports that the shooting occurred after they would not tell him where his estranged wife and their kids were. DeLuna’s wife, Blanca, had been staying with her parents.

The wife and children are safe.

The shooting occurred just a few blocks away from a school, causing Brownfield ISD to go on lockdown during the search for the suspect.
