The school shooting in Uvalde, Texas on May 24th left many parents wondering if their kids were truly safe in schools. With Texas being an open carry state and having some of the least restrictive laws on guns it's just a matter of time before teachers start carrying guns into classrooms to be able to teach without fear of a stranger coming in and shooting students.

At least one school district on the South Plains has implemented gun laws in their favor to do just that, allowing teachers to have guns to make students feel safer in the classroom.

KAMC news reports that Olton ISD has been allowing their staff to open carry since 2018, shortly after the Stoneman Douglas High School school shooting that killed 17 people. At Olton ISD, staff are allowed to volunteer to open carry guns in their classrooms but must go through training to be able to be considered for the privilege of handling the significant responsibility.

Now with one school on the South Plains allowing teachers to open carry and many school shootings just this year, could it be the push the Lubbock Independent School District needs to adopt a similar stance?

After speaking with LISD, the answer is simply up in the air. The topic of arming teachers has come in meetings before but nothing ever came of it.

LISD does encourage everyone with concerns or questions to attend their next public board meeting or submit a public question here 72 hours in advance before the meeting. The next meeting will be June 15th, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. in the Lubbock ISD Boardroom located at the Central Administration Building (West Building) at 1628 19th Street.
