On the Wednesday edition of The Chad Hasty Show, U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) joined the show to talk about the reason for his appearance in Lubbock, as well as several other topics in the news.

The reason for Cornyn's visit to the Hub City is to meet with leaders in the area at the new Community Health Center of Lubbock and discuss mental health and community safety. The meeting will feature the center's cooperation with the Lubbock Police Department’s Homeless Outreach Team and with other organizations that are actively assisting homeless and mentally ill citizens in Lubbock.

Speaking of how prevalent the homeless problem is, Cornyn said,

I've come to realize that it's almost every family in the country [that] has somebody, or knows somebody who has mental health challenges. And when it comes to law enforcement, many times law enforcement has been unprepared to deal with people with mental illness but police officers just haven't been trained, and so getting them the right kind of training so they can de-escalate the confrontations so nobody gets hurt is very important.

Cornyn and Hasty continued, discussing how background checks for firearms purchases might be affected by the proposed Mental Health and Safe Communities Act.

Cornyn also answered questions from Hasty about terrorism and the possibility of a third-party candidate in the race for President.
