Plainview Police Arrest Suspect with IED During Traffic Stop
On Tuesday, September 28th, the Plainview Police Department arrested a man after a traffic stop revealed an IED.
At approximately 12:52 a.m., Plainview police stopped a vehicle near the intersection of Utica and 20th Street. During the stop, an officer determined that an improvised explosive device, or IED, was inside the vehicle.
The Lubbock County Sheriff's Department bomb squad was called for assistance. Authorities were able to remove the device and store it at a secure location for evidence processing.
Sixty-year-old Calvin Padgett was taken into custody and charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, a third-degree felony.
A search warrant of Padgett's residence in Plainview was issued, which revealed another prohibited weapon, a rifle with a silencer, and suspected bomb making materials. The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office confiscated the alleged bomb making materials and notified the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) of the situation.
As of this time, no explanation was given on why Padgett had an IED in his vehicle or why Plainview Police conducted a traffic stop.
Padgett remains in the Hale County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
