“It’s going to be a tough year budget-wise.”

That was the prediction of Lubbock mayor Tom Martin on KFYO, when asked  about next year’s budget, which the council will be working on next month.

“We know that the tax rate is going up somewhere between 2 ½  to 3 cents for the remaining bonds that were approved by the voters in November 2009, and past that, I think there will be some people that will say we need to raise property taxes over and above that.  And then there’s some of us like me and others on the council that will say no, we’re not going to do that.

And that, the mayor said, will be one of the battles regarding next year’s budget.
