Lubbock Man Claims Self Defense in Fatal Shooting of Chance Chavez
A Lubbock man arrested on Thursday for a gun-related offense claims it was in self-defense.
KAMC News reports that 22-year-old Austin Michael Enriquez admitted to shooting 25-year-old Chance Chavez in the 2600 block of 39th Street on Wednesday. Chavez was found dead in the street by Lubbock police.
Enriquez claims the home Chavez was found in was his own. Enriquez opened the door after someone knocked, and saw a man wearing a bandanna, who pushed his way in with a gun pointed at Enriquez.
Enriquez laid on the floor, but as he was dropping he pulled out his own gun and shot the intruder, according to the complaint.
In the home, police found four guns, 93 cannabis-related items, and more than $5,000 in cash.
Enriquez has not been charged with murder, assault, or anything related to Chavez's death. However, he was charged with the use of a firearm in relation to a drug trafficking crime.
Court records say that Enriquez could face up to life in prison if convicted.
