After a couple of years of planning, votes, and using ARPA funds, Lubbock is getting much closer to the Grand Opening of the Pickleball facility at McAllister Park.
The idea to build a large pickleball facility really started gaining steam in 2022 when the Lubbock City Council voted to set aside $1.5 million dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act funding to help build a pickleball facility. At the time, reports said that the money would be used to build 8-10 courts along with other amenities. In a picture posted by the Lubbock Parks and Recreation Department on Wednesday, the facility will actually have 12 outdoor courts.
In early 2024, the Lubbock City Council gave a final thumbs up on construction of the facility. The organization, Lubbock Plays Pickleball, is attempting to raise enough money to build additional covered courts in the future.
The Grand Opening of the McAllister Park Pickleball facility is Monday, November 18 at 3pm at 6401 Marsha Sharp Freeway. The new facility has 12 lighted courts, covered areas to sit, and restrooms. along with plenty of parking. Players of all skill level are invited to play at the courts.
Lubbock Parks and Rec also used ARPA money to replace 5 playgrounds, adding splash pads, and 12 new walking trails.
