Lubbock & The U.S. May Be Paying to Share Netflix Outside Your Household Soon
If you're like most people, you, your family members and/or friends use the same Netflix account to watch movies and shows. Well, that soon might be changing.
Netflix announced on their website that they're testing out a way that will stop people from sharing their accounts just a week or two after they started raising their prices. The company started off testing the concept in Peru, Chile and Costa Rica. They said it's something they have been working on for a year.
How would it work? Users have the option to add an extra member but It can only be up to two people outside that household. Now the price depends on the country, but it could be up to $10 to $15 per additional user you add.
The website goes on to say users with Netflix Basic, Standard or Premium plans will be able to share a single account with an additional user outside the household for 2,380 CLP in Chile, $2.99 in Costa Rica, and 7.9 PEN in Peru during the test.
This is crazy because if you have a big family this is going to start costing you a pretty penny. Think about if you have kids in college. It could be a lot of family members living outside the actual household. I think this will start pushing a lot of people away from Netflix and toward other streaming services that are easier to share and not as expensive.
"We recognize that people have many entertainment choices, so we want to ensure any new features are flexible and useful for members, whose subscriptions fund all our great TV and films," the company said. "We’ll be working to understand the utility of these two features for members in these three countries before making changes anywhere else in the world."
We don't know when this major change is coming to the United States, and Netflix's website declines to say how exactly they plan to stop users who share their accounts with people outside their household.
