
Lubbock Teenager Killed During Fireworks Accident on New Year’s Day
Lubbock Police have confirmed that one person, a Lubbock teenager and high school senior, died on January 1st after an incident with fireworks.
18-Year-Old Lubbock Teenager Dies After Fireworks Accident
According to the Lubbock Police Department, initial calls to the department came in at around 7:21pm on Thursday about reports of someone being injured by fireworks as they were celebrating the New Year.
According to KAMC, the incident happened in the area of North Ulrich Avenue and Dartmouth Street. When officers arrived, they saw an 18-year-old with serious injuries. Officers attempted life-saving measures until EMS arrived on scene, but the teen was pronounced dead at the scene.
KAMC reports that the male was with family and friends who were all shooting fireworks in the street. According to the report the 18-year-old was holding a firework near his head when it exploded.
Fireworks Are Illegal Inside City Limits
The New Year's holiday is a popular time for people to set off fireworks, but officials remind citizens that fireworks inside the city of Lubbock are illegal. According to the United State Consumer Product Safety Commission, while deaths from fireworks are relatively low, over 14,000 people in the United States were treated in Emergency Rooms in 2024 due to injuries from fireworks. 11 people died from those injuries.
