The rising trend in juvenile crime around the summer months has not left the City of Lubbock untouched. In fact, Lubbock PD has issued a warning to all citizens to stay alert and watch for signs of crimes committed by minors as they carry out their day.

Everything Lubbock spoke with Lt. Brady Cross from LPD as he outlined the crimes of opportunity that young people engage in, the most common being accessing unlocked cars and stealing valuable items left in plain sight.

Lt. Cross highlighted action plans one can stick to in order to avoid becoming a victim of juvenile crime. Some key tips are locking your cars and hiding any valuables in the glove box or under the seat.

If you keep a firearm in your vehicle, take it with you when you leave, assuming you are in a location around town that allows concealed carry.

Another thing to do when traveling during summer months is to avoid announcing when you will be leaving or how long you'll be gone. It may seem fun to keep your friends and followers updated on your life, but all you're doing is telling would-be criminals when your home will be empty.

One final piece of advice that Lt. Cross offers to Lubbock citizens during summer months in order to avoid being victim of juvenile crimes is to practice good lighting.

This means installing motion lights around your house to ensure the property is illuminated at night. Also, avoid parking your car in unlit areas when out of the house. This way you limit the chance that someone will attempt to break into your vehicle under the cover of darkness.

There's no one-size-fits-all for preventing crime from taking place, but these are just some ways you can lessen the chance of it happening to you or your family.
