A man in Lubbock, Texas, was recently sentenced to prison after it was revealed that he beat a child out of anger over a pack of Pokémon cards. He also allegedly burned the child's arm with mystery meat which left blisters.
Pokémon Cards and Hot Meat in Lubbock
Back in May 2023, school staff noticed some bruises and burn blisters on a boy's body. Authorities questioned 46-year-old Jessie Olivas about what caused the injuries to the boy.
It isn't directly stated what relation Olivas has with the boy, but he is directly affiliated with his life, possibly the father. This is an assumption based on recent reports.
There were also extensive bruises found on the boy's bottom, and when questioned about a black eye, he told the school nurse that he fell off his skateboard.
An Outcry of Abuse
It wasn't until later when the boy spoke out about the abuse, stating that Olivas is physically abusive at home. One day, he reportedly got so mad with the boy that he pinned him on the ground and struck him with a belt when he found out he brought Pokémon cards to school.
Other alleged instances of abuse sustained from Olivas include the following:
- Placing "hot meat" on the boy's arm which led to multiple blisters
- Spanking the boy so hard that heavy bruises were sustained after the family dog peed in the house
- During one spanking incident, the boy struck his head on a piece of furniture, leaving a mark
Someone close with Olivas told police that he just doesn't know his own strength and gets carried away sometimes.
Criminal Charges Against Olivas
Jessie Olivas was arrested and taken to the Lubbock County Detention Center in June 2023 where he remained in custody for 709 days. His charges included aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault against a family member with a weapon, and injury to a child. Both aggravated assault charges were dismissed, however.
Olivas pleaded guilty to injury to a child and was sentenced to six years in prison. He will receive 709 days that he spent in jail as credit.
