Lubbock Man Indicted by Grand Jury for Running Over, Killing Another During Argument
A man in Lubbock has been charged with failure to stop and render aid involving a death after admitting to striking another man with his vehicle. The driver, who turned himself in, claimed the other was aiming a gun at him, but it was later revealed to just be a BB gun.
March 20th Call About a Dead Body
The events began back on March 20 where Lubbock Police Department (LPD) responded to a call saying that there was a dead body located just outside of a house on the 3000 block of 98th Street.
When officers arrived, they discovered the body of 51-year-old Shawn Bowen hunched over in a kneeling position in front of his home. Curiously enough, Bowen's wallet and a BB gun were both balancing on his back.
Bowen sustained multiple injuries, including a blow to the head that responding officers originally thought was a gunshot wound. After being rushed to University Medical Center where Bowen later died, an autopsy revealed that the injuries sustained were actually due to being struck by a vehicle.
Investigators Found 28-Year-Old As a Suspect
Fresh tire tracks were discovered on Bowen's driveway that seemed to imply acceleration, according to Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. Nearby witnesses stated that they saw a vehicle enter and exit Bowen's driveway multiple times that night.
The driver, later revealed to be 28-year-old Daniel King, went to turn himself in to LPD and explain what happened. During the interview, King stated that he originally visited Bowen's house to return some money. He allegedly tried this three times before Bowen exited his home and blocked King's vehicle, pointing a black pistol at him.
King claimed that as he attempted to leave, Bowen fired the weapon at his windshield, prompting him to step on the gas and drive forward, striking Bowen and running him over with two audible "bumps" under his tires in the process.
Bowen, who initially survived the ordeal, was seen standing up and stumbling into his yard before falling down. King stated that he then exited his car and grabbed the dropped pistol, finally discovering that it was just a BB gun.
He Never Called for Help
King allegedly returned several hours later to see if Bowen had received help or if he was just faking it. He also admitted that he never sought help or called 911.
Daniel King was indicted by a Lubbock grand jury on Tuesday after being charged with the second-degree felony of failing to stop and render aid involving death. He faces a potential prison sentence of two to 20 years.
