The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office has been receiving several complaints of someone calling people in Lubbock claiming to be a Lubbock County Sheriff's Deputy.

It's said that this person or people are using names of deputies that currently work for the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office, making it seem like they actually are deputies.

The caller will tell people over the phone that they have a legal matter or warrant for their arrest, and that they can accept payment over the phone. The caller is said to be very persistent and convincing.

The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office said it wants to remind citizens that the group, along with any other law enforcement agency, will never demand money or anything of value by phone for any civil or criminal matter.

In a Lubbock County Sheriff's Office press release, the group said that these phone scammers are becoming more sophisticated and organized in their approach to threatening and extorting victims with physical or financial harm.

If you are ever in doubt about a call you've received from someone claiming to be a deputy, you're encouraged to call the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office non-emergency number, which is 806-775-1601, to check the authenticity of the call.

Regardless of the validity you may assume of the call, it's still highly encouraged that you never give any personal information over the phone to someone you are not familiar with.
