Lubbock County Republican Party Endorses Dustin Burrows For Texas House Speaker
State Representative Dustin Burrows is receiving support at home for his bid to become the next Speaker of the Texas House.
On Tuesday, December 10 the Lubbock County Republican Party's Executive Committee took a vote to endorse Representative Dustin Burrows in his bid for Speaker. Burrows began his campaign for Speaker last week after current Speaker Dade Phelan dropped out of the race. Rep. David Cook of Mansfield is opposing Burrows for Speaker.
Over the weekend, the race for Speaker became even more acrimonious after the Republican caucus met on Saturday. The action Saturday consisted of two rounds of voting where neither Burrows or Cook were able to secure enough votes. After two rounds, Burrows and his supporters walked out of the caucus meeting lowering the threshold for votes needed to win the caucus support. Cook won the GOP endorsement 48-14, but with over a dozen Burrows supporters not voting.
Shortly after the vote, both men declared victory. Burrows announced in a press conference that he has a bipartisan list of 76 pledged supporters. Cook announced that he had 62 supporters.
Since Saturday, there have been reports of pressure campaigns and supporters switching or asking to be taken off of lists.
In a press release on Wednesday, the Lubbock County Republican Party said that Burrows is the "right man for the Speakership" and offered Burrows their full support.
Dustin Burrows has been an effective, conservative leader for our Republican values in the Texas House. He is the right man for the Speakership. He possesses the skills to unite the house and will serve our community and the great State of Texas well. Representative Burrows excels as an advocate for the people of Texas. When he chaired the committee on Ways and Means he played a key role in advancing legislation to help prevent excessive property tax growth. Chairman Burrows also proudly promotes public policy that protects the unborn. The best interest of the State of Texas is synonymous with the best interest of individual Texans; and Dustin Burrows has pulled through for Texans time and time again.
The vote for Speaker of the Texas House will happen on January 14, 2025.
