Texas Lawmakers Could Rename the ‘New York Strip’ to the ‘Texas Strip’
We love our steak in Texas and we also enjoy bragging about Texas just about any chance we get. And if Lt. Governor Dan Patrick gets his way, a very popular cut of steak could be renamed as a way to honor Texas beef producers, while also taking a small shot at New York.
This past Friday, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick sent out a post on X (formally Twitter) that caught a lot of people's attention. Patrick wants to honor Texas beef producers in a much different way than in the past. Patrick is asking the Texas Senate, and all Texas lawmakers to sign onto legislation that would rename the 'New York Strip' to the 'Texas Strip'.
The idea came to Patrick after meeting with the Texas Cattle Feeders and Cattle Raisers last week. Patrick pointed to New York mainly having dairy cows while Texas has not only the most heads of cattle at 12.2 million, but according to WFAA, the cattle industry has a $15.5 billion market value, the largest of all the states.
Patrick says the Texas Senate will file a concurrent resolution to strip New York from the strip and change the name to the "Texas Strip". The Lt. Governor said they would "ask restaurants to change the name of this strip of meat the next time they reprint menus, and grocery stores to do the same". Nothing would be mandated though.
The name New York strip comes from a nearly 200 year old steakhouse in New York City. According to WFAA, Delmonico's listed the cut as a New York strip and the name caught on. New Yorkers also have some state pride if you didn't know.
The Lt. Governor knows its not the most pressing or serious issue facing Texas right now, but says the resolution will help market Texas beef. He also points out that the Texas brand is on just about everything made or grown in Texas. Which is a great way to promote Texas and our businesses.
