In a last-ditch effort to keep his job, Lubbock County Constable Carelton Peterson has filed a counter-petition with the district court.

Peterson was arrested for drunk driving on May 6, 2018 after crashing his truck in the 5200 block of 50th Street. The crash damaged two parked cars. The 40-year-old Peterson was arrested at the scene after failing a sobriety test and charged with a DWI.  He was soon released after posting a $1,500 bond.

Despite the arrest, Peterson remains employed as Constable for Precinct 4. He has even ignored a request by the Lubbock County Republican Party to step down. Attempting to remove him from office, the group's Chairman, Steve Evans, filed a petition in district court on June 1.

But now, Peterson has filed his own petition, seeking to delay Evans' petition in an effort to keep his job.

State District Court Judge Blair Cherry has a hearing scheduled for July 6th to decide if Peterson should be temporarily suspended as Lubbock County Constable while his DWI case is ongoing.

Last month wasn't the first time Peterson has faced a DWI charge. In 2010, Peterson was arrested for driving drunk while working as a Hockley County Sheriff’s Deputy. He soon resigned from that post after being placed on administrative leave.
