Lubbock City Councilwoman Karen Gibson will not be running for Mayor in 2016. Some earlier reports indicated that Councilwoman Gibson was mulling over the idea of running for Mayor if current Mayor Glen Robertson decided not to run. When Robertson announced him campaign for Congress, speculation grew that Gibson would run.

On Thursday Gibson told KFYO that she, "decided that what is best for my district is to honor the commitment I made to them and the City and to stay in my seat for the next two years." Gibson would have had to resign her seat to run for Mayor if she had decided to run.

On Wednesday, Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees President, Dan Pope, announced that he would run for Mayor in 2016.
