Oh, Black Friday. The day our nation comes together to celebrate our crass materialism like a pack of wild dogs.

Just kidding -- Black Friday can be pretty fun. And some of us need a great deal to hook our family up for the holidays. But I would like to offer a suggestion as to how to do Black Friday in a way that "feeds the machine" a little less.

Support Local!

Supporting locally owned and/or operated businesses on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday is a wonderful way to still get a great deal, get some holiday shopping done and not feel like part of the mayhem. Why get trampled for a TV when you can get a thoughtful gift at a great price from your neighbor?

Here are just a few local businesses doing it up big for Black Friday.

    The Outdoorsman

The Outdoorsman, located at 6602 Slide Road, features items like Northface, Uggs, camping gear like Yeti coolers, sports watches and more. They will have 40-50 percent off select items for their first-ever Black Friday sale. Many of your favorite brands will be 40 percent on Small Business Saturday.

    Dirty Deeds Soap

Dirty Deeds Soap is online-only, but made right here Lubbock with expertise, creativity and care. I've bought their shave soap for my boyfriend several times; it's all he uses. Use code BLACKFRIDAY for 10 percent off your order at dirtydeedssoap.com.

    Star Books and Comics

Friday and Saturday, Star Books and
Comics will have select merchandise on sale with specials and deep discounts running all weekend. Star Comics is located at 2014 34th St.

    Samuel's Diamonds

Samuel's Diamonds is not technically locally-owned, but it is very much locally operated by some really great ladies that I had the opportunity to meet recently. Supporting them still keeps a ton of your money in the local economy and supports your neighbors. They are doing a huge Black Friday sale with up to 70 percent in store and they are giving away three necklaces throughout the day and a gift basket worth over $200.

    Monster's Lair Comics

I'll let their Facebook speak for itself: "Monster's Lair Comics Black Friday Sale! We will have 20% off Store Wide! New Comics, Old Comics, All Comics 20% off! Toys and Graphic Novels 20% off! All Pops! are 20% off! Comic Supplies 20% off! Come out to Monster's Lair Comics at 2416 19th St, Lubbock! We will be open 11-7!"

    The Library Bar

This one is kinda my favorite. When you're done shopping (or if you need a place to hide while your family is shopping), The Library Bar is bringing the fun stuff about BF out without any of the rest. The game will be on and they'll be giving away a 42" flat screen TV, along with many other prizes beginning at 5 p.m.
