On Thursday, August 18th, a Dallas law firm sent a letter to Lubbock-Cooper ISD Superintendent Keith Bryant saying that parents have concerns about their children being victims of racial discrimination at Laura Bush Middle School.
KAMC News reports that the parents reached out to Ellwanger Law, LLLP in Dallas, Texas for the discrimination and harassment their children experienced. The letter sent to Superintendent Bryant claims that black students were being subjected to an environment where white students would call them racial slurs and derogatory terms. Some students would even allegedly play the sound of whips on their phone when black students would walk past.
Back in April 2022, an Instagram account was created that encouraged others to send pictures of black students and referred to them using derogatory language. Soon after the Instagram page was discovered, LCISD issued a statement saying:
There is no place for racism, hatred, or harassment at Laura Bush Middle School or in the Lubbock-Cooper community as a whole. This behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
The letter claimed that the students experiencing this harassment were being deprived of their 14th Amendment right to equal protection. The parents have reported these issues to Laura Bush Middle School's principal, assistant principal and several of their teachers.
Lubbock-Cooper ISD was given 14 days to respond to the letter. If they don't, the Dallas law firm says that they will take it as the school district not desiring to work "towards and amicable outcome."
Lubbock-Cooper ISD has yet to publicly comment "on private student matters."
