For almost nine decades Texas had a tradition of offering a last meal request to inmates who were about to face their execution. That all came to a halt thanks to one extreme request, and what came after. Now, those inmates facing execution simply eat whatever is on the menu that day.

Here is the inmate who trolled Texas into doing away with last meals.

The Heinous Crime Committed By Lawrence Brewer

Lawrence Brewer was found guilty of a heinous, racially motivated murder that occurred in 1998. He was found guilty of participating in the beating, torturing, and dragging of a man to death with a logging chain.

Brewer, who had plenty of previous run-ins with the law, was given the death penalty.

The Insane Last Meal That Ended Them All In Texas

Brewer was asked to give his last meal request. He went all out. I'm not sure I would call it "odd" since all of the items on the list are delicious, it's just insanely huge. For some crazy reason, his request wasn't denied.

His request was for:

  • A triple meat bacon cheeseburger
  • two chicken fried steaks smothered in gravy and onions
  • cheese omelet with ground beef, tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, jalapeno pepper
  • three fajitas
  • a big bowl of fried okra with ketchup
  • one pound of BBQ
  • half loaf of white bread
  • meat lover's pizza
  • pint of homemade vanilla Blue Bell ice cream
  • one slab of peanut butter fudge with crushed peanuts
  • three root beers

Oddly enough, it wasn't the menu that made this the final "last meal" in Texas. It was what came next.

A Massive Feast, And No Appetite

When Brewer was served this insane meal, he didn't touch it. This absolute feast went untouched. All Brewer had to say for himself, according to legend, was that he simply wasn't hungry.

This act served as the straw that would break the camel's back. After Brewer's last meal stunt, it was decreed that death row inmates would eat whatever was on the menu for that day. No more would Texas inmates be given the luxury of a last meal.

Amarillo On 'America's Most Wanted'

I was surprised to find out recently that we also have a bit of a history with the show America's Most Wanted.

Digging through old news articles, I found several separate occasions where Amarillo and America's Most Wanted crossed paths. It makes me wonder if there are some that I've missed.
