Texas isn't as independent as it seems.

Taxes are complicated, but the basic idea here is simple: most Americans pay taxes to the federal government, and some of that money flows back to the states through federally funded programs. These programs include things like Medicaid, SNAP benefits, infrastructure spending, and federal jobs. Because of this system, some states end up receiving more in federal support than others relative to what their residents pay in taxes. That difference is what studies measure when they talk about a state’s “dependence” on the federal government.

A recent analysis from WalletHub looked at exactly that — how much each state relies on federal dollars. The study measured two main factors: how much residents get back compared to what they pay in federal taxes, and how much of the workforce is tied to federal jobs. It also examined the level of reliance by state governments themselves.

Texas Isn’t As Independent As It Thinks It Is

When all the numbers were added up, Texas ranked 39th in federal dependency. That actually places the Lone Star State toward the less-dependent side of the list, which fits with Texas’ reputation for economic strength and independence. However, it also shows that Texas isn’t quite as self-sufficient as its reputation sometimes suggests. Even a large and economically powerful state still relies on federal funding to support programs that millions of residents use.

For a little perspective — and perhaps a bit of interstate gossip — Alaska ranked as the most dependent state on federal support, while New Jersey came in as the least dependent. That wide gap highlights how dramatically the balance between federal taxes paid and federal dollars received can vary across the country.

So while Texas certainly isn’t leading the nation in federal reliance, the numbers show that even the most fiercely independent states are still part of a larger financial ecosystem.
