Many drivers assume their vehicle is most at risk when parked at home, but new data suggests that assumption may be false. A five-year analysis from Compare the Market shows that most car thefts in Texas occur while vehicles are parked away from a residence during everyday activities.

Texas Car Theft Data at a Glance

Over the past five years, Texas recorded 491,974 reported vehicle thefts, based on data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting program. Of those thefts, 35 percent occurred at a residence or home, while 65 percent happened when vehicles were parked elsewhere. The breakdown closely mirrors national trends.

Where Vehicles Are Most Often Stolen

When cars are stolen away from home, parking-related locations account for the majority of cases. Parking lots, drop lots, and garages make up 51 percent of reported thefts away from home in Texas. Streets, highways, alleys, and sidewalks account for another 20 percent. Commercial and office buildings represent 5 percent of cases, followed by hotels and motels at 4 percent and specialty stores at 3 percent.

Why Everyday Locations Pose a Higher Risk

Experts say many vehicle thefts are crimes of opportunity. Busy areas with frequent foot traffic, poor lighting, or minimal surveillance can make it easier for thieves to operate unnoticed. Simple oversights such as leaving doors unlocked, keeping valuables visible, or briefly leaving a vehicle running can significantly increase risk.

Steps Drivers Can Take to Protect Their Vehicles

Drivers can reduce their risk by locking doors and windows at all times, parking in well-lit and populated areas, and keeping valuables out of sight. Avoiding common mistakes such as leaving a spare key inside the vehicle or relying solely on factory-installed security systems can also help. Visible anti-theft devices like steering wheel locks, alarms, and GPS tracking systems remain effective deterrents.

Expert Insight on Prevention

Adrian Taylor, Executive General Manager of General Insurance, says awareness is a key factor in preventing vehicle theft. He notes that understanding which vehicles and situations are most at risk allows drivers to make smarter decisions and combine good security habits with appropriate insurance coverage to reduce both the likelihood and impact of theft.

The Takeaway for Texas Drivers

Car theft in Texas is more likely to happen during routine stops than while vehicles are parked at home. With parking lots and public streets accounting for the majority of incidents, drivers are encouraged to stay alert and take preventative measures wherever they park, not just in their own driveway.
