Lubbock Residents Share Their Quirkiest Daily Discomforts
Living in Lubbock, Texas, does something weird to your brain. You get used to things like dust storms, sudden weather mood swings, and driving 15 or 20 minutes to get just about anywhere. But, no matter how long someone has lived here, some things, and I'm talking, totally everyday things, still feel deeply wrong...
We asked Lubbock: What's something totally normal that still weirds you out every time? Here are the results:
The Human Body
A lot of Lubbock's answers pointed directly to the human body doing... well... human body things. Nothing dramatic. Just existing or going potty. We are not fans. I mean. When you think about it, it's kind of..uhh..weird and gross.
Pregnancy was also mentioned. One guy said that even after being an Army Nurse for decades, he still thinks feeling a baby kick in a woman's stomach is totally sci-fi. He blamed it on watching too many alien movies, but honestly, I've always been a little bit freaked out about it, too...
Food
Food always sparks strong feelings among Lubbockites. The texture of cheesecake was called into question. Black-eyed peas were rejected for "looking back at you," something I'll never get out of my head. And ketchup on tamales (as always) was mentioned as being borderline offensive.
Small Talk
Social discomfort has become a theme around here, and small talk with strangers made the list several times. Nobody cares much for that, or for random people trauma-dumping on them at the gas station. People FaceTiming in public without headphones was also mentioned. Oh, and then there's the deeply unsettling realization that some people in the world genuinely enjoy working a 9-to-5 in a little cubicle. It doesn't make sense to a lot of us, but it suits others just fine.
Oddly Specific Mentions
Some fears were oddly specific but still universally relatable, like airplanes flying overhead like whales in the sky, airplane bathrooms in general, and dogs making eye contact with you while they do their business. What about the quiet panic we all get when the escalator ends? Yep. That made the list somehow, too.
The Truth Is...
The takeaway from all of this? Living in Lubbock might toughen you up in a lot of ways, but it doesn't erase the weirdness. Not by a long shot. Some things in life will always feel slightly off, and honestly, knowing that your neighbors are just as unsettled by the same everyday nonsense seems to make the pill easier to swallow.
At least we can all agree on one thing: just being its "normal" doesn't mean it isn't weird.
