Hundreds Of “Cold-Stunned” and Paralyzed Sea Turtles Were Found Along The Texas Coast
At the end of last week, cold temperatures swept across and an impact from the panhandle all the way down to the Texas coast. And this past weekend, hundreds of sea turtles had to be rescued along the Texas coast.
According to Chron.com, nearly 200 sea turtles were found along the Texas coast paralyzed this past weekend. The turtles were "cold-stunned" which led them to become lethargic and unable to swim.
The sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation center in South Padre called Sea Turtle, Inc., rescued the sea turtles from the coastline. According to Chron.com, when water temperatures fall below 50 degrees, sea turtles can become "cold-stunned" and if they aren't rescued in time, they may be unable to lift their heads to take a breath.
According to Sea Turtle, Inc. after the sea turtles are rescued they are taken to facilities where they can warm up and then be released into the ocean. But first they have to get out of the cold water and cold air so their bodies can adjust.
With more cold air on its way to Texas, there may be other times this year when turtles will have to be saved from being cold-stunned.
