Police in Clovis, New Mexico say they found an improvised explosive pipe bomb near their City landfill.

Clovis police were called to the 2800 block of East Brady Avenue, just adjacent to the City of Clovis Regional Landfill around 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The device was found by a city work crew near a water main valve.

The Clovis Police Department contacted the New Mexico State Police Explosive Ordnance Division and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

The New Mexico State Police EOD “interrupted the device on site,” according to a press release.

Clovis police say the device was similar to two others discovered in the Clovis area since January 2013, consisting of a metal pipe wrapped in tape with a fuse at one end, a cap loaded with explosive powder, and metal shrapnel materials.

The matter has been referred to the Federal ATFE Agency in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
