A former player for the Dallas Cowboys has been indicted by a federal grand jury on drug distribution charges.

26-year-old Samuel George Hurd III has been charged with one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine and one count of possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine. Also indicted is 26-year-old Toby Lujan, who faces the same charges.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, a confidential informant advised U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations unit that Lujan was attempting to purchase about 4 kilograms of cocaine for a buyer later identified as Hurd, who played for the Chicago Bears in July 2011.

A coordinated traffic stop was arranged by the agents, who found a bag containing $88,000 cash. Lujan told authorities that he maintained Hurd’s vehicles, and that the money was Hurd’s, who would leave large sums of money in his vehicles.

More contact between the confidential informant, Lujan, and Hurd occurred, resulting in Hurd reportedly attempting to purchase more cocaine to distribute.

The press release from the U.S. Attorney’s office states that “Hurd, according to the complaint, said that he and another co-conspirator currently distribute approximately four kilograms of cocaine per week in Chicago, but that his supplier couldn’t supply him with enough quantity.”

Following a negotiation with an undercover agent, Hurd allegedly accepted a kilogram of cocaine at a restaurant in Chicago, and was arrested in the parking lot.

If convicted, Hurd and Lujan face a statutory sentence of not less than 10 years and up to life in prison and a $10 million dollar fine for the conspiracy count, and not less than five years and up to 40 years in prison and a five million dollar fine for the possession with intent to distribute count.

The wide receiver will next be in federal court in Dallas for arraignment.
