Ford Faces Lawsuit After Texas Man’s Death by Out-of-Control Truck
The family of a man who was crushed and killed by his own Ford truck is suing the automotive company for failing to notify of defective systems.
The Death of Roy “Mack” Irwin
On June 18, 2024, Roy Irwin made a stop at a New Braunfels subdivision while running errands. Video footage was obtained showing the exact moment his Ford F-250 truck began malfunctioning.
Despite the vehicle being in park, it began driving forward and backward on its own as Irwin was out of the driver’s seat. The passenger of the vehicle attempted to grab the wheel and stop the truck from moving, but to no avail.
When Irwin noticed what was happening, he attempted to chase after the truck and hop into the driver’s seat. This is when the truck backed up, crushing Irwin’s torso under the front tire. He initially survived, but was trapped under the weight of the Ford truck until first responders were able to arrive on the scene and free him.
Roy Irwin later died at the hospital due to injuries sustained from the truck tire.
Ford Company Lawsuit
Irwin’s family filed a lawsuit in Bexar County that accused Ford and the New Braunfels dealership of “neglectfully selling a vehicle with a defective transmission system that allowed the truck to shift gears” on its own, according to My San Antonio.
There was also a grill guard installed on the front of the truck that prevented the vehicle’s emergency break response from triggering during risks of pedestrian danger.
The family’s lawyer, Jeff Wigington, stated that Irwin was in good health and had a life expectancy of many more years, had he survived.
Irwin’s family is seeking recovery of hospital bills, funeral expenses and emotional pain suffered by Roy’s sudden death.
