Friday on The Chad Hasty Show, Chairman of the Texas House Ways and Means Committee Representative Dustin Burrows joined Chad to talk about stories developing in Austin.

Burrows and Hasty discussed several issues including property tax reform, school finance reform, the Texas Tech Vet School, and more.

Property Tax Reform was officially unveiled to the public, and Representative Burrows was asked about his thoughts on it. Burrows said that he cannot think of a time that the Governor, the Speaker of the House, the Lieutenant Governor, and the Chairman filed identical bills on the same issue. He went on to say that he believes that they are unified in their pursuit on property tax reform and school finance reform. He explained that his House Bill 2 was put forth to do three things: 1. It ensures the rapid growth of property taxes. 2. It empowers citizens to say no. 3. It ensures transparency so that citizens know who is raising their taxes and by how much.

"I'm very proud of the bill, and look forward to working with all members of the Texas House going forward to make sure it's a great bill that passes."

Representative Burrows was also asked how the average citizen can affect decisions being made going forward, including the 2.5% rate which could change in the future. Burrows strongly encouraged citizens to call him and discuss their issues so that he can better represent them.

Burrows also talked about School Finance Reform, the 2nd of the two biggest issues in Austin, in his opinion. The Representative said that he is happy that the legislature is so focused on these two issues, and that he expects another school finance bill to be coming up. When asked where the money for school finance will come from, Burrows said, "We're going to lower the reliance on property taxes for school funding, and we're going to make it up with increases in the state budget where we get elsewhere."
