State Representative Dustin Burrows has been elected as the next Speaker of the Texas House. Burrows defeated State Representative David Cook after a second round of voting by securing 85 votes made up of a coalition of Republicans and Democrats.

Tuesday's vote elevates Burrows to one of the most powerful positions in state government. But the position of Speaker also comes with controversy. Over the past few sessions, there has been Republican in-fighting, disagreements between the Speaker and Lt. Governor, and activist organizations threatening to primary the Speaker for not being conservative.

Even this session's Speaker's race saw opponents of Burrow's threaten to primary and censure Republicans who didn't vote for Cook.

Last session, Speaker Dade Phelan and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick had a frosty relationship at best. Many of those who pay attention to the Texas Legislature have noted that a good working relationship among the "Big 3" known as the Governor, Lt. Governor, and Speaker, can lead to a smooth legislative session. While Lt. Governor Dan Patrick supported Cook in the Speaker's race, he hasn't show any unwillingness to work with Burrows.

Burrows was sworn in as Texas Speaker shortly after winning the office. Burrows gave a short speech to the House and then wrapped up the working day. The House will be back in session Wednesday at 10:00am.
