Update: According to a Facebook post from Cancino’s mother, the teenager passed away on September 3rd. A GoFundMe page has been created to help the Cancino family during this difficult time.

Original story: A student from Dalhart High School was taken to an Intensive Car Unit in Lubbock after sustaining a head injury during a football game.

KAMC News reports that sophomore Yahir Cancino was injured during the 4th quarter of a junior varsity football game against Sundown High School. Yahir lost consciousness during the game and was airlifted to Lubbock after first responders were unable to revive him.

Superintended of Dalhart ISD Jeff Byrd released a statement saying:

The entire Dalhart community is saddened by this event. Due to concern for Yahir, his family and our entire student body, Dalhart High School has decided not to participate in any extracurricular activities this weekend.

Out of respect for this student and his family, the District will not disclose any further information or make any additional comment concerning this matter. We appreciate your understanding, and continued support for the family. We encourage everyone to keep Yahir and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

A vigil was set to take place at Dalhart High School's football field Friday night, according to Byrd.

Most recently, Yahir's mother said on a Facebook post that he "isn't doing very well." No further updates have been given on his condition.
