Could the Democrats Look to a California City for New Gun Laws?
California has some of the strictest gun laws in the United States. They have restrictions on what type of gun you can own, and how many rounds can fit in a magazine. Democrats have discussed how they can put taxes on ammunition to make firearms more expensive to own, as well as allowing lawsuits on gun manufacturers for every gun crime to drive up prices.
CNN reports that the city of San Jose has come up with new restrictions to make it cost more money to own a firearm. They are going to force people in San Jose that own firearms, to own insurance on a firearm to cover costs that happen if it is used. The city also wants gunowners to pay a fee to a non-profit every year to help with the cost of all firearm crimes.
The city council is having a second reading this week to put the ordinance in place. Mayor Sam Liccardo stated, “Certainly the Second Amendment protects every citizen's right to own a gun. It does not require taxpayers to subsidize that right.” He also estimates that the cost for San Jose taxpayers is 442 million in gun related costs each year.
I think the Democrats are foaming at the mouth to see if this ends up working. They have been looking everywhere for something that they could do to tell their base that they are tough on guns. The first thing this will give them is a list of gun owners. Second, it will force everyone who owns a gun to spend money monthly and yearly to keep it. The major problem with this ridiculous law is that it will only put roadblocks on legal owners of guns. I would bet that most people that commit crimes, will not have insurance or even legally own a gun.
Luckily, there are groups, even in left-wing San Jose, that are going to take the city to court. The National Foundation for Gun Rights has already stated that they are prepared to fight it in court if the ordinance passes. I doubt you would see a law like this in Texas, but do not be surprised if the Democrats push something like gun insurance if they ever get the power to push it through nationally. They would love to turn their hate for guns into government money.
