Coach Kingsbury Likes Team Effort, Mahomes’ ‘Gutsy’ Performance in TCU Loss
In Coach Kingsbury's press conference after the loss to TCU Saturday (September 26), Kingsbury commended quarterback Patrick Mahomes for fighting through an injury to help keep the Red Raiders in the game.
"[Mahomes] wasn't his normal self, I think you could see that... but he hung in there, had a gutsy performance."
During Kingsbury's Monday press conference, he continued the thought.
"I felt more for him because I knew he couldn't do what he normally does on some of those things," said Kingsbury about limiting his play calling because of Mahomes' injury. "But, I was just very proud of the way he battled and hung in there. He was very good for not being 100 percent... He gave us a chance at the end."
"You know, if he can go out there and limp around and drag his leg around and still complete passes and lead us on scoring drives..." Kingsbury added. "He ran for a couple of first downs kind of limping around. That shows his teammates what he's all about, and it fires him up."
Hopefully, Mahomes is available for the Baylor game this weekend, Saturday, Oct. 3.
The injury update from Kliff was as in-depth as it's ever been: "He's day to day." Riveting insight from the Texas Tech head coach. The same was said about Ian Sadler, who left the game after an apparent leg injury.
The biggest difference between the 2014 TCU game and the 2015 TCU game was the effort put forth on the Texas Tech side of the ball. That is something that Coach Kingsbury says he can work with moving forward.
"Just the effort. Just the effort. Guys kept playing, kept fighting. So that's something you can work with," he said.
This team just isn't going to quit. That is going to keep them in a lot of games. Kingsbury thinks it's just about finishing: "Continue to fight, give that great effort, clean some things up and then when you get a chance you gotta finish it."
Kingsbury said he doesn't think there will be a hang over from the loss moving forward.
"It's a bowl atmosphere with a split down the middle. If you can't get fired up for this you got issues," he said. "So they'll be ready to go. They have a great mindset and they know we gotta get better this week."
