Beat the Heat and Enjoy the Buddy Holly Center Summer Showcase
It's been insanely hot outside that even my car's transmission gave out but don't let that stop you from having some fun at the Buddy Holly Center Summer Showcase.
Meet the Band
The band performing at the Summer Showcase is Alma Quartet. This band was founded back in 2002 is one Lubbock's premier Vocal Jazz bands. Alma Quartet doesn't just specialize in Jazz but also play Bossa Nova and Samba music, with original lyrics in Portuguese.
This band is comprised of Charles Whitehead who plays the piano and tenor saxophone, John Reid on bass, JT Paz on drums, and the singer Jerry Serrano who also plays trumpet, guitar, and piano. These four have come together to bring their sound that closely resembles that of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.
The Journey
I obviously had to give this band a listen to see what mental journey I could have and this was a new one. I was instantly transported to a jazz club with everyone wearing some of their best clothing and dancing the night way. Their jazz sound did give a bit of a cocktail with olives vibes that I have never heard in West Texas but their other genres of music were a totally different place. The Bossa Nova and Samba took me to a time of black and white television with dances most nights of the week. There was a sense of pride in all of the playing as everyone's talents came together and just formed something out of a different time.
