61-year-old William Alan Shelly, a former Muleshoe ISD Band Director, has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison after he admitted to sexually abusing an 8th grade student.

Muleshoe ISD initially sent out a release on March 8th, 2021 that indicated an unnamed employee was placed on leave after having allegedly engaged in illegal conduct with a student. Muleshoe Police contacted the FBI in regards to the situation the day before, March 7th.

It's said that from January to early March, Shelly had been in a sexual relationship with a girl who was either 13 or 14-years-old. While searching Shelly's smartphone, investigators confirmed the allegations based on text messages.

Shelly admitted that he had sexual contact with the girl, and even wrote an apology letter to both the girl's parents and his own sister for his conduct.

KAMC News reports that in April, Shelly accepted a plea deal for enticement of a minor, and faced between 10 years to life in prison. On Thursday, October 14th, Shelly was sentenced to 14 years.
