A group of 5th graders were on a playground at North Ridge Elementary School when they found a handgun.

A statement by Frenship ISD said that the handgun was found the morning of Friday, October 22nd. The students found the gun hidden underneath a blanket outside and immediately alerted teachers.

Frenship ISD and Lubbock Police officers were already nearby at the time when they responded to the playground. They said that it appeared the handgun was connected to a recent burglary, and that it was dumped at the playground overnight.

Frenship ISD made sure to contact the parents of those who were outside when the weapon was discovered. Counselors were also on stand-by throughout the day to talk to students.

In their statement, Frenship ISD said:

We are proud of the fifth-grade students who immediately alerted teachers of the weapon, and we want to thank the staff and officers for their quick response to ensured everyone’s safety.

The details concerning the handgun's connection to any other incidents remains unclear at this time.
