Between midnight on Sunday, March 3rd, and 10 a.m., the Lubbock Police Department said units responded to more than 50 traffic accidents.

Sixteen people were injured in those accidents, according to LPD.

The City of Lubbock released a statement discouraging travel on local roads, specifically flyovers, overpasses and bridges, due to icy conditions following a Saturday night cold snap that hit the area with freezing temperatures and some precipitations.

Sunday morning, the City said it had reopened the southbound flyover from I-27 to South Loop 289. The flyover was closed earlier due to accidents and icy conditions.

From the City of Lubbock:

City crews have reopened the southbound flyover from I27 to south Loop 289. Icy conditions still exist on elevated surfaces like flyovers, overpasses and bridges. Travel is discouraged this morning, but if it is necessary please slow down and use extreme caution. The Lubbock Police Department reports it has responded to more than 50 accidents since midnight, 16 of those with injuries.

According to the Lubbock Police Department, TxDOT crews are in the area treating roads.
