Anyone with a license has heard the dangers of distracted driving, but what if I were to blow your mind by saying that it is most definitely a life-threatening risk?

We often dismiss these warnings as just repeated slogans from state officials, but when you hear stories of people who's lives were completely destroyed because someone wouldn't put their phone down while driving, maybe these ad campaigns are on to something.

TxDOT Says No Phones While Driving

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) just notified the public of the dangers of distracted driving. They include the heart wrenching story of Maria Espinoza who's son was struck by a distracted driver when he was just 6 years old.

Miraculously, he survived the accident after being pinned under the car and spending six months in a coma.

He later became an avid spokesman for making sure all drivers are paying attention when behind the wheel.

Distracted Driving Crashes in Texas

TxDOT provides some insight on distracted driving accidents and what you can do to prevent these. First, they note that, in 2024, 91,000 crashes in the state are the result of drivers failing to pay attention behind the wheel. This also resulted in 370 deaths.

Not to mention the fact that, you know, it's ILLEGAL. Getting caught on your phone while driving can result in a $200 fine in Texas.

TxDOT was also kind enough to provide safety tips when driving:

  • Stay focused by keeping both hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road
  • Put your phone away and place it in "Do not Disturb" mode while driving
  • Pull over to a safe place if you need to send a message

I hate to sound like a cheesy PSA, but it's true. Driving while distracted could lead to death or injury for anyone involved!
