According to the news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, during a routine inspection, agents reported hearing movement coming from inside a tractor-trailer.
As agents walked around the back and opened the trailer's rear door, they found a number of individuals crouched behind pallets of freight in attempts to hide from the authorities.
37 undocumented migrants were found to be hiding inside the trailer. The entirety of the group were all from various countries like Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba, El Salvador, and Ecuador. All 37 were transported to a processing center to be further examined.
The release includes that, throughout the past year, El Paso Sector Agents found a total of 24 tractor-trailers attempting to smuggle 387 undocumented migrants between them.
El Paso Border Patrol
The El Paso Sector Border Patrol often runs into smuggling attempts and tactics used by large-scale criminal organizations such as this recent discovery of migrants hidden in commercial vehicles.
The reason why this is highly advised against, besides the fact that it's 100% illegal, is because putting large numbers of people into an enclosed space without seatbelts or adequate ventilation can seriously threaten the safety of everyone involved.
El Paso Sector Chief Anthony Scott Good stated that, despite the fact that these smuggling tactics can endanger lives, "we remain focused on enforcing immigration laws, holding smugglers accountable, and applying consequences to those who cross the border illegally or attempt to circumvent the legal immigration process."
