34th Street reconstruction will finally begin soon we learned yesterday. According to KFYO News,

At their meeting this week, the Lubbock City Councilawarded the paving contract to a Lubbock company for the 34th Street reconstruction project.

The $8,988,866 bid by Lone Star Dirt and Paving of Lubbock was approved unanimously by the Council Thursday morning for the project, which will reconstruct 34th Street from Indiana Avenue to Avenue Q.

The funds come from a 2009 bond election allocating $20,725,000 to reconstruct the street, which is over 50 years old. It was determined following the six public meetings with citizens and business owners regarding the project that some in the area wanted more than basic concrete paving, prompting the city to add some decorative alternatives.

Alternate 1 adds brick pavers in the parkway areas, at a cost of $118,074, and Alternate 2 adds decorative street light poles at a cost of $319,200. Lone Star Dirt and Paving’s total bid includes the price of the two alternatives.

Construction on 34th Street is expected to begin in late February. The contract allows for 423 working days for completion.

Businesses along 34th Street have got to be happy that construction is about to begin. Sure, it will create an inconvenience, but the street and area will look better in the future. It will also be better on all of our cars, which is a plus. Hundreds of businesses line 34th Street and most are small businesses. Today, we want to find out how many people do business or shop on 34th Street. Let us know in today's LFN Poll of the Day.
