A day of fun at Dunbar Lake in the Canyon Lakes System in Lubbock ended in tragedy with the death of two people.

Lubbock Fire Rescue held a press conference Wednesday announcing the death of two people who drowned in Dunbar Lake in Lubbock.

Interim Chief of Lubbock Fire Rescue, Rob Keinast, told the media Wednesday afternoon that shortly after 2pm, authorities received a call about a possible drowning near the dam at Dunbar Lake. Crews arrived on seen and witness told authorities that two people were struggling and went under the water and never came back up.

The Lubbock Fire Rescue dive team arrived and performed their rescue recovery operation and pulled two males from the water. They were pronounced dead at the scene at around 2:50 pm. Authorities believe the ages of the victims were 41 and 16-years-old. Lubbock Fire Rescue announced that the bodies were recovered 10 feet under water.

Authorities reminded the public to wear life vests when near the water and that swimming in the water ways and playa lakes in Lubbock is illegal.
