Tips on Fire Safety and Home Protection
Ready.gov goes in depth on safety amidst disasters like home fires. They say that homeowners of all kind, either singles or families, should create a fire escape plan for the horrible event that a house fire should occur.
If you want to stay ahead of these disasters, make sure you follow these fire safety plan tips:
- Find at least two exits from each room
- Practice maneuvering each room with the lights out
- Teach your children to not be afraid of firefighters
Some more general house fire safety tips include sleeping with your bedroom door closed, and keeping an updated fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
During a fire, always head to an exit on your hands knees to avoid inhaling excess smoke. Make sure you feel the doorknob first, if it's too hot to touch, leave it and head to your second exit option, ready.gov urges.
If you cannot reach someone who is need of assistance, or if you are unable bring them to safety, then exit the building on your own and inform authorities where the other person is inside the home.
If you are trapped in a room and can't escape, grab clothes or blankets to block vents and cracks in doorframes. Call 911 and tell them where you are in the house before waiving a bright piece of fabric or a flashlight through the window for others to see.
