A number of weather watches and warnings are in effect this afternoon for Lubbock and the South Plains due to extremely high winds.

High Wind Warnings are in effect for the South Plains, Permian Basin, Texas Panhandle and Eastern New Mexico through 4 o'clock this afternoon. Winds across the region will gust to up to 65 mph during today's dust storm.  Through 1 o'clock today, the Texas Tech Mesonet has recorded gusts of over 60 mph at a number of their observation sites.  Some of the sites with winds over 60 mph include Floydada, Dimmitt, Amherst and Reese Center. There is also an extreme fire danger due to the dry and windy conditions with Red Flags Warnings in effect too.

A Dust Storm Warning continues for most of the South Plains through 4 o'clock today.  The warning area does include the cities of Lubbock and Plainview.  Driving is being discouraged due to very limited visibility.

Finally, most of the flights scheduled through 4:30 at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport have been cancelled due to the dust storm and high winds.
