It’s not a long plane ride from San Diego to Phoenix -- but today’s flight for the ASU Sun Devils will be an especially quiet one, because Texas Tech’s Red Raiders scored an upset 37 to 23 victory last night against ASU in the Holiday Bowl.

Freshman Davis Webb threw for 403 yards and tied a Holiday Bowl record with four touchdown passes, as the Red Raiders won for the first time since beating West Virginia on Oct. 19. Webb completed 28 of 41 passes. He threw touchdown passes of 18 and 21 yards to Jakeem Grant, 1 yard to Rodney Hall and 23 yards to Bradley Marquez, all in the first half.

Texas Tech All-America tight end Jace Amaro had eight catches for 112 yards. The Sun Devils, coming off a 38-14 loss to Stanford in the Pac-12 championship game, were held 18 points below their average. ASU dropped to 0-4 in the Holiday Bowl dating to 1985.

Jace Amaro  set a new NCAA record for most receiving yards by a tight end in a single season with 1,352 yards in the Red Raiders’ 37-23 victory over No. 14 Arizona State.

In the postgame press conference, Amaro announced that the Holiday Bowl would be his last game in a Red Raider uniform as he intends to make himself eligible for April’s National Football League Draft.
