The State of Texas now has a new historian.

Governor Rick Perry has appointed Bill O’Neal as the Texas State Historian through August 2014.

O’Neal, who resides in Carthage, Texas, is an award-winning nonfiction author and history instructor at Panola College.

He received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in history from East Texas State University, and attended post-graduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

O’Neal is a member of the Texas State Historical Association, West Texas Historical Association, and the Wild West History association Advisory Board, among others.
