Filming Movies in Texas

Austin has been the filming destination for countless films over the years thanks to popular annual events like the Austin Film Festival and SXSW (South by Southwest).

Fortunately, the West Texas region has also had its fair share of spotlight in film with movies such as Kill Bill: Volume 1, No Country for Old Men, and There Will Be Blood.

According to the Texas Film Commission, there are actually a total of six film friendly communities within a 2-hour drive from Lubbock. These include the following:

That's right, our heart of Texas, Lubbock, is a certified film friendly city. With notable locations like Buffalo Springs Lake, the Buddy Holly Center, Texas Tech University, and McKenzie Park, Lubbock has countless areas that invite filmmakers from around the world.

How Can You Film a Movie in Texas?

In order for a movie crew to be able to legally begin filming in a Texas city, they must follow three main requirements:

  • Must provide production insurance in the amount required by the desired location
  • The project must be film, television, or commercial for educational, industrial, or commercial purposes
  • Film company must be able to reimburse the state agency for costs incurred during production

Oh yeah, and pornographic movies are NOT permitted to be filmed on Texas soil, according to state law.

Insurance for Movie Sets in Texas

Filming a movie can often be incredibly expensive. In fact, I won't go through the entire list, but Texas requires a minimum of $1 million in general liability and automobile liability EACH.

You can see the full list of requirements for filming in Texas on the Texas Film Commission website.
