A Volkswagen sedan is now listed as the fastest hybrid.

A 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid recorded a speed of 185.384 miles per hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats during the Southern California Timing Association’s annual Speed Week.

The time posted by the Jetta, driven by Motor Trend Associate Road Test Editor Carlos Lago, is the fastest speed ever achieved by a production-based hybrid on the Salt Flats, located near Wendover, Nevada.

The Jetta Hybrid features a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 150 horsepower, and an electric motor that provides an additional 27 horsepower.

Achieving this speed at Bonneville shows that the all-new 2013 Jetta Hybrid is a distinctly different offering in the compact hybrid class,” said Jonathan Browning, CEO and President of VW Group of America.

The Jetta Hybrid is expected to have a combined fuel economy of 45 miles per gallon.
