Cruel and lazy pet owners dumping unwanted animals off in the middle of nowhere is something that happens all too often on lonely Texas highways. There's always a better solution for a pet you can't care for, and it's hard to imagine the monsters living among us that are capable of callous behavior such as this.

A 68-year-old Texas man is to blame for this heartbreaking incident caught on camera by a dog rescuer that happened to be waiting in that area for just such an occasion. This highway happens to be a popular place to leave dogs to die in El Paso, according to the Instagram post.

The man's passenger is seen unleashing the dog while parked on the side of the road, and then the two drive away. The 10-month-old husky chases after their car.

Justice will be served in this instance because someone was in the right place at the right time and happened to catch the deplorable act on their phone, but that's not always the case.

I know from first-hand experience that highway 349 between Rankin and Midland is a hot spot for abandoning pets. Once while I was driving that highway, I spotted four dogs standing together on the side of the road, in the absolute middle of nowhere, with no tags, and miles from any house. I pulled over and put them all in my car and took them to a no-kill shelter, which was over an hour away, and probably one of the reasons people don't take the time to go to one.

Texas is sprawling and some of the tiny towns don't even have animal control, let alone a shelter, and that's a big problem.

If you find that you can no longer care for a pet, please contact a no-kill shelter and make arrangements for them. Don't forget that while a pet may only be a small part of your world, YOU are their entire world. You are their best friend, even if they aren't yours.
