The Street Dog of the Week: Brownfield Lady Cubs

The mentality of Chris Beard and Texas Tech has always been defined using two very simple words, "Street Dogs". Beard wants guys always hungry and looking for their next meal to survive. That never say quit attitude was shown last week by Ty Larson, the student manager who suited up and took a charge. In its second week of existence, the Street Dog of the Week award stays on the hardcourt but heading to the high school ranks to talk about a team that never quit this season and nearly ran the table.

The Lady Cubs of Brownfield won the State Championship 33 years ago in 1988 with Sheryl Swoopes who would go on to become the greatest women's basketball player of all-time. Now, in 2021, the Lady Cubs have done it again beating Fairfield 68-64 to finish their season 30-1.

The 5th ranked Lady Cubs ran through a gauntlet to get to the State Championship beating Presidio by nearly 70 points before beating Childress and 16th ranked Peaster. Their final three games in the playoffs featured Number 1 Shallowater, number 4 Ponder and number 2 Fairfield for the title.

The Lady Cubs led 33-30 heading into halftime, led by Gabi Fields who had 16 points in the first half. The second half was back and forth with Fairfield holding the lead in the second half on numerous occasions.

The Lady Cubs kept fighting though.

Fairfield would go on a 6-0 run in the 4th to extend the Lady Eagles lead, but Dabria Blackwell would go on a run of her own. Scoring five of seven unanswered points for Brownfield to tie it up at 60 and force overtime on a three-pointer with less than a minute left in regulation.

The Lady Cubs would own overtime.

The Lady Cubs Gabi Fields was named championship MVP with 22 points, six rebounds, six steals, and three assists. She and the current Lady Cubs were joined by numerous 1988 Lady Cubs including a couple rather noticeable in the video above.
