Those familiar with the San Antonio-Austin area have heard of Kyle, TX. What you may not have known is that they have been attempting to break a world record for the past five years.

Kyle, TX has been hosting an annual gathering of the Kyles at Lake Kyle Park to break the current Guinness World Record of the largest same-name gathering.

The rules set in place for the record to be valid are as follows:

  • All participants must register and show proof of identity in order to be included in the official count
  • All participant names must be spelled as 'Kyle', any other iterations like Kyler or Kylee do not count
  • Middle or last names are not accepted

Last year, the city offered multiple events and games for all Kyles who showed up to help break the record. Before I move on, it's important that I mention some stereotypes of those named Kyle.

If your name is Kyle and you do not reflect any of these stereotypes, then I'm sorry, but among the meme-loving community, Kyles are often depicted as energy-drink-loving, anger-prone, drywall-punching white men...

It seems the city of Kyle took this into account, as last year there was actually a drywall punching station at which any Kyle can convey their anger. Good on the city to stay in the know on current memes.

The current record-holder for the largest same-name gathering is in Bosnia and Herzegovina with 2,325 Ivans in one gathering back in 2017.

Last year, Kyle, TX was over 800 Kyles short of the record at 1,490 Kyles. This year was not so successful.

On May 18th, for their fifth attempt, the city of Kyle only gathered 706 Kyles in total.

Stay positive, Kyle, TX. You know what they say, "sixth time's a charm".
